Frc Lifetime Studies for the Field Reversed Configuration Heating Experiment (frchx)*

چکیده
The goal of the Field-Reversed Configuration Heating Experiment (FRCHX) is to demonstrate magnetized plasma compression and thereby provide a low cost approach to high energy density laboratory plasma (HEDLP) studies, which include such topics as magnetoinertial fusion (MIF). A requirement for the field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma is that the trapped flux in the FRC must maintain confinement of the plasma within the capture region long enough for the compression process to be completed, which is approximately 20 microseconds for FRCHX. Current lifetime measurements of the FRCs formed with FRCHX show lifetimes of only 7 ~ 9 microseconds once the FRC has entered the capture region. A description of the pulsed power systems that comprise FRCHX will be presented along with an overview of the magnetic and plasma diagnostics fielded on the experiment. Results from recent FRCHX experiments will then be presented, and possible reasons for the lifetime limitations will be discussed along with several approaches for overcoming these limitations.

Onset and saturation of ion heating by odd-parity rotating magnetic fields in a field-reversed configuration.
Heating of figure-8 orbit ions by odd-parity rotating magnetic fields (RMF(O)) applied to an elongated field-reversed configuration (FRC) is investigated. The largest energy gain occurs at resonances (s congruent to omega(R)/omega) of the RMF(O) frequency, omega(R), with the figure-8 orbital frequency, omega, and is proportional to s2 for s-even resonances and to s for s-odd resonances. The thr...
متن کاملUWFDM-1102 Energy and Particle Confinement Times for a Field-Reversed Configuration
The energy and particle lifetime scalings in a field-reversed configuration (FRC) are shown to depend on transport regimes and geometric parameters. The improved formulas have been compared with other empirical and theoretical scaling laws. The result is that confinement time dependence agrees with experimental measurements (for the present status of the experiments Ti ≤ 1 keV and s > 1) of ene...

An annular field reversed configuration (AFRC) plasma thruster concept is being developed by AFRL and the University of Michigan. This concept is derived from the coaxial slow source FRC fusion reactor concept developed at the University of Washington and has been re-tooled for space propulsion applications. A scaling energy model, commercial magnetic field model, and a proof-of-concept experim...
متن کاملAn Overview of the Star Thrust Experiment
The Field Reversed Configuration, FRC, is a closed field fusion confinement geometry with great potential to be used as a space propulsive device and power source. Present formation techniques are cumbersome and severely constrain the resultant FRC. An experiment is presently under construction to study the formation and sustainment of the FRC using a rotating magnetic field. If successful, thi...
